Today we want to focus on Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialist area of dentistry. It centres around the diagnosis, prevention and correction of your bite along with other dental irregularities. The most common method used to treat such irregularities being with the use of braces or aligners.

With the correction of alignment issues and irregularities orthodontics is a popular treatment option for creating Dream Smiles and Smile Makeovers.

The Most Used Treatment Options

When it comes to orthodontics this would be Invisalign or fixed braces. Both treatment options are designed and used to straighten teeth. Not all teeth and jaws will allow the use of aligners and the treatment used will depend on the condition of the teeth and the correction needed. Let’s delve a little deeper into what aligners and fixed braces are:

  • An aligner (retainer), like Invisalign, is essentially a clear, removable, plastic tray which is designed to straighten teeth. It does this by slowly manoeuvring your teeth into position over a period of time. Multiple trays will be needed along the journey and you will need to wear the aligner for around 22 hours a day. Removing the aligner to eat, drink and brush your teeth. They are thin enough and large enough to sleep in.

  • Fixed braces are, like you would imagine, fixed onto your teeth. They are made of metal and must remain in place until the irregularity is fixed. Gone are the days where they are clunky and uncomfortable. Fixed braces can be worn comfortably on a daily basis and you can even have coloured fixtures. They do however have to be careful with what you eat - you should avoid sugary and acidic food along with hard sticky food. This is for two reasons - to avoid damaging the braces but also to protect your teeth from decay.

Treatment

Treatment is case specific. What this means is that what is the most suitable treatment option for you will depend on your situation and lifestyle. Consideration needs to be given to movement required, rotations, missing teeth, overcrowding or missing teeth, diet, lifestyle and of course your desired results.

Here at M Dental we take the time to understand your needs which includes arming you with the right information to choose. This means that every patient receives a personalised treatment plan on how their Dream Smile can be achieved. At your initial consultation the Orthodontist will walk you through your options and answer any questions that you may have. All you need to do is book your initial consultation.

Treatment Length

The truth is there isn’t an exact length of time treatment takes. Treatments will vary on how your teeth and gums react to the treatment. However as a general guide it can take between 6-19 months and fixed braces around 18-24 months.

Are Aligners or Fixed Braces More Comfortable?

Generally patients report aligners as being comfortable to wear. Patients also like the clear material used with aligners. But this doesn’t mean to say that braces are uncomfortable. Advances in technology means they are no longer clunky and modern brackets are much smaller. What works for you will depend on a number of factors and this should be something you should discuss with a dental expert.

Taking Care of Your Orthodontic Treatment

To achieve longevity of your treatment, and the best outcome, it is important that you take care of your teeth now and in the future. Taking care of your aligners, fixed braces and indeed your teeth and gums during treatment is vital. A poor oral hygiene routine can lead to decay, irritation, gum disease and even bigger problems.

So what does caring for your orthodontic treatment look like?

When it comes to aligners these should be removed regularly, at least twice a day, to brush and floss your teeth. At the same time you should also clean your aligners.

Cleaning of fixed braces is slightly harder, given their fixed nature, but it is important nonetheless. You must ensure you brush and floss over and around the braces including the brackets and wires. Removing any food particles is important to prevent decay. If you are concerned about achieving the right clean with fixed braces talk to your dentist or orthodontist. They can give you guidance on both techniques and advise, where possible, on apparatus to use.

What about costs?

Generally speaking fixed braces are cheaper. This is largely down to the fact that once braces are fitted they are in place. They can be tightened and checked on but the outlay of cost is in the initial material used. Unlike aligners which require a number of trays, depending on the severity, which means there is more outlay in the cost of the trays.

Regardless of whether you opt for aligners or fixed braces you will need regular check-ups to ensure your treatment remains on the right track. Initial consultations can be booked from as little as £117 with information on the likely cost of your treatment being provided after initial consultation. However as a very general rule aligners can, depending on severity, range from £3,500 to £5,500 and for fixed braces between £2,500 to £4,500.
