Considering braces? Why Invisalign Might be the Best Option and How M Dental, Canada Water, Can Help

We know that the prospects of braces, for some, is not something they look forward to. This we understand, from our patients here at M Dental Canada Water, is because they feel that braces are a more permanent structure and because they are quite noticeable. Although of course some people prefer this, liking the colours and designs.

Whilst braces are a semi permanent structure, braces are only ever left in for as long as needed to correct an issue. They are there to do a job and achieve great outcomes for patients. But with that being said we understand why some are reluctant to move forward with braces. But fear not Invisalign could be an alternative option for you. Our expert M Dental Canada Water team is here to advise patients on what will work best for them.

What is Invisalign

Invisalign is an alternative to braces. It’s aim is to straighten teeth by using a clear tray (as opposed to brackets and wires used in traditional braces). Patients are given, after consultation and impressions, a series of trays which need to be used throughout your journey. Typically (and dependent on the issue being fixed) trays are changed every 1-2 weeks. The aim of the trays is to slowly align teeth into the desired position over time.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

There are many benefits of Invisalign – with some benefits being more important to patients than others. But here is a few examples of some of those benefits for you:

  • The trays are removable allowing you to remove them to brush your teeth or for a special occasion. Although we do of course recommend you limit their removal and follow guidelines given to you by your specialist dentist (orthodontist). When working with M Dental all of this will be discussed during your consultation;

  • The trays are clear and as such it means they are less noticeable. This in turn, for those who are self conscious, can elevate some of those fears;

  • Often less trips to the dentist are required than say with braces;

  • Using Invisalign can be faster than using traditional braces. Although time is dependent on each patient roughly Invisaligns are used for 12-18 months.

  • Patients report Invisalign is more comfortable than wearing fixed braces.

Is the maintenance and cleaning on Invisalign hard?

The short answer is no it isn’t. Having a healthy dental routine should already be a part of your daily life. There are additional steps needed for Invisalign but these steps are not hard.

Invisalign trays should to be cleaned with a soft bristle toothbrush. This cleaning should be done daily in addition to your normal dental hygiene routine. However we recommend using mouthwash with your Invisalign trays in place. This helps by reducing bacteria inside your mouth and on the trays themselves.

As you can see the additional cleaning of the trays is not hard and helps you to achieve the smile you are looking for. In contrast fixed braces do require more upkeep e.g. specialist brushes are recommended and extra care is needed in addition to your normal dental routine due to the brackets and wires. Braces also require more regular dental check-ups take place to ensure no damage has been done by day to day brushing and lifestyle.

Is Invisalign suitable for everyone?

Invisalign is typically used to treat more minor misalignment issues. That is not to say that someone will automatically not be suited to Invisalign if their misalignment is more than minor – every patient is treated on a case by case basis and receives a personalised treatment plan.

Other examples, for when Invisalign would not be the best option, includes gum disease, missing teeth or you’ve previously had certain teeth removed. But as we have said above patients are treated on a case by case basis. Our M Dental Canada Water orthodontist looks at the best options for you and what will give you the results you desire. When designing a treatment plan for our patients M Dental ensures that you are consulted all of the way. Sometimes, depending on the misalignment you are facing, they may be multiple option on how your misalignment can be treated. But rest assured you are in good hands with our very own M Dental Canada Water Orthodontist.
