Root Canal Treatment: What to Expect and Why It Is Nothing to Fear
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is one of the most misunderstood dental procedures. Modern techniques and anaesthetics have made root canal treatment a routine, comfortable procedure that can save a tooth that would otherwise need extraction.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face. Common signs that you may need a root canal include:
  • Severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Discoloration (darkening) of the tooth
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums
  • A persistent or recurring pimple on the gum

The Root Canal Procedure

Step 1: Local Anaesthetic — Your dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area with local anaesthetic. The procedure is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Step 2: Access and Cleaning — A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. Step 3: Filling and Sealing — The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed with adhesive cement. Step 4: Restoration — A crown is usually placed on the tooth to protect it and restore full function. This may be done at the same visit or a follow-up appointment.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

With modern anaesthetics and techniques, root canal treatment is typically no more uncomfortable than having a standard filling. The pain people associate with root canals usually comes from the infection itself, not the treatment. Most patients report feeling significant relief after the procedure.
