Dental anxiety is more common than you might think. Studies show that up to 36% of people experience some level of dental anxiety, with 12% suffering from extreme dental phobia. If the thought of visiting the dentist makes you feel anxious, you are not alone — and there is help available.
What Causes Dental Anxiety?
Dental anxiety can stem from various sources:
- Previous negative dental experiences
- Fear of pain or needles
- Feeling of loss of control
- Embarrassment about the condition of your teeth
- Fear of the unknown or unfamiliar sensations
Strategies to Manage Dental Anxiety
1. Find the Right Dentist
The most important step is finding a dental practice that understands and accommodates nervous patients. Look for a practice that offers sedation options, has positive reviews from anxious patients, and takes time to listen to your concerns.
2. Start with a No-Obligation Visit
Many dental practices, including M Dental, offer no-obligation meet-and-greet visits. This allows you to meet the team, see the practice, and discuss your concerns without any pressure to proceed with treatment.
3. Communicate Your Fears
Tell your dentist about your anxiety. We cannot help if we do not know. A good dentist will adapt their approach to make you feel comfortable.
4. Agree a Stop Signal
Before any treatment begins, agree on a signal (such as raising your hand) to pause treatment if you need a break. Knowing you are in control helps reduce anxiety.
5. Use Distraction Techniques
Bring headphones and listen to music or a podcast during your appointment. Some practices also offer calming music in the treatment room.
6. Bring a Friend
You are welcome to bring someone you trust to your appointment for support.
Sedation Options for Nervous Patients
For patients with significant dental anxiety, M Dental offers two sedation options:
IV Sedation (arranged via a specialist) — For patients who need deeper sedation, we can arrange intravenous sedation with a trusted external sedation specialist. You stay safely monitored throughout and usually remember little of the treatment.
Oral Sedation — A prescribed sedative tablet taken before your appointment. Provides deeper relaxation while you remain conscious. You will need someone to accompany you home.
