Dental Bridges: A Complete Guide to Replacing Missing Teeth

Dental Bridges: A Complete Guide to Replacing Missing Teeth
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap between your remaining natural teeth. Bridges are a popular, cost-effective option for tooth replacement that can restore both function and aesthetics.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by dental crowns on the adjacent natural teeth (abutments). The bridge is permanently cemented in place and cannot be removed by the patient.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Fixed Bridge — The most common type. Crowns are placed on the teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth in between. Suitable when you have healthy natural teeth on both sides of the gap. Cantilever Bridge — Used when there is only one natural tooth adjacent to the gap. The bridge is supported by a single crown on one side. Less common than traditional bridges. Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge) — A conservative option with metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of adjacent teeth. Requires minimal preparation of adjacent teeth. Implant-Supported Bridge — Rather than relying on natural teeth, the bridge is supported by dental implants. This is the most stable option and preserves bone health.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Restores chewing function — eat your favourite foods with confidence
  • Maintains facial structure — prevents sagging from missing teeth
  • Prevents tooth shifting — stops adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap
  • Improves speech — missing teeth can affect your ability to pronounce certain words
  • Natural appearance — modern materials match your natural tooth colour

Bridges vs Implants

Bridges are a good option when you have healthy teeth on either side of the gap and want a cost-effective solution. However, bridges require grinding down healthy adjacent teeth and do not prevent bone loss like implants do.
