Good daily dental hygiene is the foundation of a healthy smile. While regular visits to your dentist are essential, what you do at home between appointments makes the biggest difference to your oral health.
1. Brush Twice a Day for Two Minutes
Brush your teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Most people brush for less than 45 seconds — set a timer or use an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.
2. Use the Correct Technique
Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Use gentle, circular motions rather than aggressive back-and-forth sawing. Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces, and chewing surfaces of all teeth.
3. Don't Forget to Floss
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing. If traditional floss is difficult, try floss picks or interdental brushes.
4. Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash
A good antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce plaque, prevent gum disease, and freshen your breath. Use it after brushing and flossing for best results.
5. Clean Your Tongue
Bacteria accumulate on your tongue and can cause bad breath. Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush to gently clean your tongue each day.
6. Stay Hydrated
Drinking water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria. Water also helps maintain saliva production, which is your mouth's natural defence against tooth decay.
7. Limit Sugary Snacks and Drinks
Sugar feeds the bacteria that cause tooth decay. Limit sugary snacks, fizzy drinks, and fruit juices. When you do consume sugar, try to do it at mealtimes rather than grazing throughout the day.
8. Avoid Smoking
Smoking stains your teeth, causes bad breath, increases your risk of gum disease, and is a leading cause of oral cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your oral and general health.
9. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly
Replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush is less effective at removing plaque.
10. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
No amount of home care can replace professional dental check-ups and hygiene appointments. Visit M Dental every six months for a thorough examination and professional cleaning.
