Why You Need An Expert for Teeth Whitening

With an increase in DIY kits being made available we wanted to talk about why it’s important that teeth whitening is undertaken by a suitably qualified expert. In most cases this will be a dentist or other dental professional such as a dental hygienist or dental technician.

What the Law Says

In the UK it is illegal for someone to provide teeth whitening as a service unless they are suitably registered with the GDC (General Dentist Council). What’s more, teeth whitening kits made available over the counter, or indeed on the internet, legally can only contain 0.1 per hydrogen peroxide (the substance used to whiten teeth). This means that with such a low concentration of bleaching agent it is extremely unlikely that kits like this will have any noticeable change to the whiteness of your teeth. As such it is safe to say they are a waste of money.

Only a teeth whitening kit from dentist, registered with the GDC, can contain enough bleaching agent to make a noticeable difference to your teeth. It goes without saying that such products should never be used without the professional advice of a dentist. Here at M Dental Canada Water all of our dentists are qualified and registered with the GDC.

Illegal Teeth Whitening

Despite what the law says independent reports show an increase in non qualified professionals undertaking teeth whitening treatments. Rather alarmingly some reports have found unqualified people using whitening kits which utilised up to 300 times the legal limit of bleaching agent. Some of these kits are available, illegally on the internet. It is therefore safe to say that any kit available directly on the internet, not bought from a dentist, is either ineffective or harmful to your health.

Using an unqualified professional, or illegal whitening kit, can lead to a wealth of problems. This includes pain, blistering, swelling, tooth sensitivity and in some cases even third degree burns. A lot of these results create a lasting problem for not just your dental health but your overall health.

Safe Teeth Whitening by a dentist like our expert team here at M Dental Canada Water

Teeth Whitening can, when used or carried out correctly, be a perfectly safe treatment option. Whilst teeth whitening uses bleach a dentist will use the same in a safe amount and in a controlled environment. There is no such thing as brilliant white teeth, and nor would you want that, but it will lighten your teeth to give a cleaner, light and fresh look.

Typically teeth whitening takes 2 to 3 visits. An impression is taken of your teeth to create the tools needed to whiten your teeth. This is then used with whitening gel over a period of time and must be used at the direction of a dentist. Another option, known as laser whitening, is also available. This must only be applied by a dentist and will involve having the treatment in a dental practice. The latter option being a quicker option, with results visible in as little as an hour or two.
