How to improve oral health
New Year’s Resolutions are made by many millions of people each year. But here at M Dental we believe that your dental health should always be at the forefront. Your dental health, and overall health, impacts each day of your life. This blog’s aim is therefore look at: How to improve oral health.
How to improve oral health and how M Dental can help
We all know that throughout the year, due to how busy we are, our dental and general health can take a back seat at times. But moving forward lets put into place a positive change to ensure this doesn’t happen. Neglecting your dental health, as you know from previous blogs, can have a detrimental effect on your overall health. So instead of neglecting your health lets talk about how to improve oral health with some healthy dental practices to put in place now and for the future.
Tooth Brushing
This first one seems obvious but goes without saying. Brushing your teeth twice a day, even when tired or unwell, is very important. Give your teeth and gums the best chance of fighting off any harmful bacteria and bad breath as well as clearing your teeth and gums of any dislodged food.
How to Properly Brush Your Teeth
Remember M Dental, and experts all around the world, recommend you brush your teeth twice a day. But don’t fall foul of thinking a quick brush is enough. Adults should brush their teeth for at least two minutes, with a suitable toothbrush, twice a day. The best toothbrush is one that has soft bristle. But electronic brushes can also be a positive tool in your dental routine. Remember here at M Dental our online shop has a range of brushes, including electronic toothbrushes, to help you optimise your dental routine. Simply click here to take a look.
Here at M Dental we recommend changing your toothbrush (or brush head for electronic toothbrushes) every 3 months and after being ill. We know this might feel like a lot but remember bacteria can grow on a toothbrush. It should be a key take home on how to improve oral health.
Floss
Not everyone flosses but we think you should. Skipping floss can leave food dislodged in between your teeth and gum-line. As you might expect food can root when stuck in your teeth. This means you will have an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Floss is an inexpensive, but important, option to help you remove dislodged food and prevent plaque build up.
Let’s Get Healthy
A healthy routine needs healthy food and exercise.
What we eat, such as high in calcium foods, really help our teeth stay strong. Having a balanced diet will also ensure that your general health is looked after. Whilst milk is the first thing most people think of, when it comes to calcium rich foods, others include beans, lentils, yoghurt, cheese, green leafy vegetables, fish (which includes the bones e.g. pilchards and sardines) and even some breads are made with fortified flour. But don’t forget if you don’t drink regular milk there are lots of milk alternatives which are fortified.
Sugar, as good as it may taste, needs to be in moderation. Not just because of the calories but because it aids in your bodies production of acid which in turn attacks the enamel on your teeth. Alcohol also contributes to tooth decay, along with other health issues. We understand that alcohol is a factor in some people’s lives, and you don’t necessarily need to give up, but you should be mindful about how it impacts your body. So cutting down and taking a break can really help your body. If you do eat sugar or drink alcohol it is even more important to make sure you adhere to a strict healthy dental routine.
It goes without saying that exercise really does help our overall health. It has even been found to reduce toxins in your body, as well as play a part in weight loss. Studies have also found, and we have to agree, that when exercising regularly you are more likely to make healthy eating choices.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated helps your body over all. It can aid in helping you stay focus, reduce fatigue and boosts your oral hygiene. How does it help your oral hygiene we hear you ask? Well having a dry mouth will reduce the amount of saliva you produce. Saliva is used by your body to wash away bacteria from your teeth. Not staying hydrated will therefore increase the risk of cavities and can also lead to bad breath.
