Dental Crowns…The Crown Jewels of Cosmetic Dental Treatment

Dental Crowns
The dental crown - a powerful tool in our dental treatment options!

What is a Dental Crown?

Used mainly in cosmetic dentistry, a dental crown is a prosthetic cap. A specially designed cap shaped and fitted to go over teeth. Their primary function is to restore teeth to protect from decay, cracks, discolouration and other tooth irregularities. They are a modern and functional way in which to restore a smile.

Crown Options

Each crown is designed, shaped and crafted from materials such as porcelain and alloy. These materials offer a durable and aesthetically pleasing final outcome. But let’s take a look at the different materials used:

  • Aesthetic Crowns: Made to give a natural look they are sculpted to match the natural jaw and surrounding teeth. Their colour is designed to blend making them, once fitted, almost impossible to recognise.

  • Metal Crowns: As you would imagine these are made out of strong materials which includes gold, platinum and metal alloys. This in turn makes them resilient and ideal as back teeth. But perhaps not as popular, given their colour, as the aesthetic crowns mentioned above.

  • Ceramic and zirconia crowns: A popular choice these materials having the added benefit of being translucent. Made without heavy metal it is often a choice from those who are conscious about metals and those with common metal allergies.

The Treatment

Following advances in technology it is now possible to have a crown in one visit. Here at M Dental we have access to a revolutionary dental restoration method known as CEREC. With CEREC we are able, through computer-aided 3D design and manufacturing, to produce crowns to be fitted in one appointment. CEREC results means the crown can be created with great precision and accuracy making this expert technology a valuable asset to M Dental.

Getting Started On Your Crown Journey

Booking a crown appointment is easy - simply give us a call on 0204 518 8554 to book in.

At your initial consultation your expert M Dental dentist will examine your teeth and gums. This includes assessing the area for the crown as well as your general oral health. After determining suitability your tooth is then prepared to receive a crown. This involves reshaping the existing tooth as well as removal of the outer structure of the tooth. This allows for the crown to fit perfectly and create a natural looking tooth.

From there our expert will take a scan of the tooth in question as well as your mouth generally. This will enable our CEREC machine to create a custom-made crown fit for you. From there the crown is fitted and expertly checked to ensure a colour match and the all important bite alignment. Thereafter the crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth to create a first class bond.

After fitting the crown our expert team will walk you through how to care for your new crown.

After care

Like with all dental treatments you should take care of your new tooth or teeth. This will ensure that you get the maximum possible life from your crown. This includes having a follow up appointment so that our dentists can check for function and aesthetics. Crowns should be cared for like you would care for your normal teeth. They should be carefully brushed, at least twice a day, and you should ensure that food doesn’t become lodged in or around it. Like with all dental routines we recommend you use floss carefully, use a fluoride toothpaste as well as that all important mouthwash. When brushing, brush gently but firm enough to remove the day's build up. Generally speaking brushing should take around two minutes of your time in the morning and at night.

Maintaining your regular check-ups, at least once every 6 months, is recommended after your initial follow up appointment. You should also make an appointment with a dentist if you notice any changes in your mouth, discomfort or there is anything you are worried about with your oral health. We also recommend, especially with crowns, to visit a hygienist regularly.

The Benefits of Crowns

They create a better aesthetic look to your mouth after damage or treatment of irregularities. But there are many more benefits to a crown. They are also able to improve the functionality of your teeth through fixing a weakened or damaged tooth, correct a bite and, in some cases, improve speech.

One of the main advantages, from an aesthetics point of view, is that it helps with confidence. This is because an expertly created and fitted crown can fit seamlessly into your mouth and blend in with your natural teeth. This means that unless you tell them most people wouldn’t realise you had a crown.

Taking care of your crown, like we have mentioned above, a crown is an effective long term treatment for your teeth. When a crown is expertly fitted and looked after their typical life can be up to 15 years.
