Dental emergencies can be frightening and painful. Knowing when to seek emergency dental care can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Here are five signs that you need to see an emergency dentist right away.
1. Severe Tooth Pain
If you are experiencing persistent, severe tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief, you may have an infection or abscess. Tooth pain that keeps you awake at night or radiates to your jaw, ear, or neck requires immediate attention. What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief if suitable, and call your emergency dentist immediately.2. Knocked-Out Tooth
A knocked-out tooth is a true dental emergency. If you act quickly, there is a good chance the tooth can be saved and re-implanted. What to do: Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty — do not scrub or use soap. Try to place the tooth back in its socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or saliva and get to your dentist within 30 minutes.3. Swelling or Abscess
Facial swelling, a gum boil, or a pimple-like bump on your gum can indicate a dental abscess — a serious infection that can spread to other parts of your body if left untreated. What to do: Rinse with warm salt water and call your emergency dentist immediately. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to A&E.4. Broken or Cracked Tooth

What to do: Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze. Save any broken pieces and see your dentist as soon as possible.5. Lost Filling or Crown
A lost filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth exposed and vulnerable to damage, sensitivity, and infection. While not always painful, it requires prompt treatment to prevent further problems. What to do: If you have the crown, keep it safe. You can use dental cement (available at pharmacies) as a temporary measure.
